"Our family's tradition is to start the meal with a bowl of creamy oyster stew. I like a sparkler like a Spanish cava (Segura Viudas) with this course. It is a festive way to begin a meal, and is a perfect foil to the richness of the cream, butter and oysters."

5 PERFECT HOLIDAY SPARKLING WINES
"Light-bodied with excellent acidity, this Spanish sparkling wine (a.k.a. cava) is a great deal."
- Food & Wine, January 2007

88 POINTS
"Slightly sweet on the nose, the aromas of baked fruit, cream soda and vanilla are welcoming. Interestingly, the wine is a bit more tart and refined on the palate, where zesty but full apple and pear flavors run the show. Not lean but definitely streamlined and acidic. More of a food wine than a stand-along sipper."
- Wine Enthusiast Magazine, December 15, 2006

GOOD/VERY GOOD
"Serve this one at a party. It's clean, fruity and refreshing, with a nice underpinning of minerals. Very easy to drink."
- The Dow Jones Cava Index, The Wall Street Journal, July 15, 2005

87 POINTS
"Aromas of stone fruits, lemon-lime and ripe citrus are crisp and welcoming. The palate follows the nose, offering lemon, lime and orange. Zesty yet easygoing; the quintessential cava quaff. Good for parties and receptions because it tastes right yet costs only 10 bills. Best Buy."
- Wine Enthusiast Magazine, December 15, 2004

"...Brut Reserva is the best Cava we tasted last year, regardless of price, a graceful, complex bubbly with dry apple flavors wrapped in smoke, spice and minerals."
- Wine & Spirits, June 2004

EXCEPTIONAL VALUE - 92
"Unexpectedly complex, this first hints at smoke, cocoa and dry spices, and that layering rolls into the taste as well. Forward, ripe apple fruitiness rises above a dry hint of apple skin, wrapping up in a citrus and mineral grip. Stylistically it's graceful and austere, perfect for simple grilled shellfish of any kind."

"Segura Viudas, owned by Barcelona’s Ferrer Family, has been a favorite of mine for years....Every holiday season, I taste the Aria Brut (the best of their labels, in my opinion), thinking it might change but it never does. For merely $12, it’s consistently fabulous and dry, citrusy with pear and toasted bread. You just can’t beat it for the price. And the pretty bottle doesn’t hurt either."

WINE OF THE WEEK
"Unlike most inexpensive sparkling wines, you’ll find the fresh bready notes of a fine Champagne that come from the wine being aged on its yeasts for about three years. It also has persistent and tiny bubbles – another characteristic of fine Champagne. It is bone dry, and offers flavors and aromas of apples, pineapple, almonds and lime. It is crisp, clean and refreshing with a long clean finish."

WINE OF THE WEEK
"Try the Penedes region of Catalonia in Spain, where the best cavas (Spanish for sparkling wines) offer excellent value. These cavas are neither as ripe-tasting as California bubblies nor as toasty as France's champagnes, but instead offer dry, satisfying flavors that echo citrus and apple fruit with earthy undertones. Aria Brut from Segura Viudas is consistently a first-rate example. It is widely available and definitely value-priced, well worth buying by the case."

VALUE
"For the money, this is one of the most unabashedly delicious sparklers I have ever drunk - it wasn't enough just to taste it; I had to pour a whole glass in order to enjoy (and restrain myself from a second in order to leave leftovers for the survivor test). 90 POINTS - EDITOR'S CHOICE
"The king of the Segura Viudas line comes out the gate a bit heavy, with mineral, slate and iodine aromas along with citrus rind and yeast. But it gets better with air, as bready, richer characteristics appear. Only modestly tangy on the finish, with far more complexity than the average cava delivers."
